My Vintage Routes

Road trips in search of vintage finds

Old Books and Slow Afternoons

A roadside shop with a hand-lettered sign, a woodstove, and cloth-bound spines worth the detour.

The shop has a woodstove, which tells you what season it was built for and how little has changed since.

Books are shelved by a logic I never worked out — poetry beside farm manuals, a shelf of atlases under the window. The owner said the system is “what fits where.”

There was a typewriter on the table by the door, still inked. I typed one line on a scrap of paper and left it there for whoever came next.

I left with three cloth-bound volumes and a road atlas from 1974 that has roads on it that no longer exist. Those are my favorite kind of map.

Sometimes the long way around is the point.
